Richard Weigand

We design and build custom furniture to meet your needs and desires. We work closely with you to create that unique piece in the style you want. We have experience in Art and Crafts, Art Deco, Contemporary and many other styles. We can build custom chairs, tables, desks, rocking chairs and any other peice you desire. We have a special affinity for Arts and Crafts and Art Deco styles.

Richard Weigand spends most of his time in his Virginia mountain workshop, where he designs and builds custom furniture pieces in collaboration with a client or working on a museum-quality furniture reproduction project for a private collector or furniture preservation organization.

Richard has extensive design experience outside of the field of fine furniture, including painting, ceramics, architecture, writing and other arts. For most of the last decade he has focused on honing his skills with wood. His love of beautiful wood can be found in the artistic, functional furniture he builds.

A number of years ago Richard Weigand's first sculpted rocker was entered into a hand-made furniture contest and won him first place.  Since then he hasn’t had the time to enter into further contests, as he’s been busy building pieces for clients.

A recent commission won Richard the honor of reproducing some Greene & Greene designed furniture in the Bolton House in Pasadena, CA. Style 1900 magazine featured the Bolton House in its winter 2010-2011 issue. As David Mathias, author of Greene and Greene Furniture, Poems of Wood and Light said in his blog entry for Custom Made [LINK to http://custommade.com/by/virginiamountainwoodworks], “Richard received the Holy Grail of custom furniture making – reproducing Greene & Greene designed furniture for a Greene and Greene designed home.”

John Ruskin, the English art critic and essayist on art and architecture was an early inspiration for Richard. Ruskin believed that something should be what it appeared to be, and not pretend to be something else. The honesty, quality and care of the Arts and Crafts movement were what  first appealed to Richard.  Then came the subtle beauty of the Greene and Greene work.

Richard once said, "I’ve always admired expertise in any field and especially older pieces with their sense of history. Not fancy things really, just good craftsmanship with lots of care put into it. Great design, great materials and great craftsmanship.”  This sums up the way Richard Weigand approaches every piece of furniture he creates – great design, great materials and great craftsmanship.

He is currently working on a commission building a curly maple/walnut art deco office set he designed for Philip and Charlotte Hanes of Winston/Salem, North Carolina.
